Professor Ba Shusong serves as the Managing Director and Chief China Economist at Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX). He is also the Chief Economist at the China Banking Association and holds various leadership roles in a number of academic and professional institutions, including Chairman of the Peikang Chang Research Foundation of Development Economics and Vice President of the China Society of Macroeconomics. Additionally, he is the Vice President of China Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics and serves as the Director of its Aging Finance Division.
Professor Ba’s research and practical experience span various areas in Finance such as the Basel Capital Accord and risk management, asset management, banking development, and the operations of modern exchanges. He is known for his comprehensive understanding of financial policy decision-making, theoretical research, and market operations. Before joining HKU Business School, he served as an adjunct professor of finance at several prestigious universities, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and the University of Science and Technology of China. Since 2021, Professor Ba has also been a member of the Actuarial Advisory Board for the Actuarial Science Program at Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies.
Professor Ba receives special government allowances from the State Council as an expert in Finance. He has served as a keynote speaker for collective study sessions of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China. He was a committee member of the Professional Committee of China’s 13th Five-Year Plan for National Development and Planning. Since May 2024, he has served as an expert in the Chief Executive’s Policy Unit Expert Group in HKSAR. From 2020 to January 2025, he was a member of the Mainland Opportunities Committee at the Hong Kong Financial Services Development Council. Additionally, he served as a member of the Economic Development Committee of the HKSAR government from 2012 to 2017.
