Brief Introduction
As sustainability becomes a defining challenge of our time, investors and stakeholders play a critical role in guiding corporate behavior and influencing public policy. The Center for Environmental and Social Responsibility aims to support this transition by advancing rigorous research and policy engagement on environmental and social outcomes.

Our Mission
The Center for Environmental and Social Responsibility is dedicated to advancing sustainable development by supporting the design of robust reporting standards and evaluation frameworks, particularly for Chinese firms. We study the roles of diverse stakeholders—such as investors, producers, consumers, and employees—in shaping environmental and social outcomes, and assess the effectiveness, trade-offs, and unintended consequences of various policy tools to inform better governance and regulatory practices.
Work Focus
01
ESG Reporting Standards and Evaluation Frameworks:
We work on developing and refining environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting standards and impact assessment tools, with a particular focus on aligning Chinese corporate practices with global benchmarks. Our research supports greater transparency, comparability, and accountability in sustainability disclosures.
02
Stakeholder Behavior and Incentives:
We analyze how different stakeholders—including institutional investors, retail investors, consumers, and employees—shape environmental and social outcomes through their choices, incentives, and influence. This includes studying engagement strategies, shareholder activism, and sustainable consumption behavior.
03
Sustainable Investment and Capital Allocation:
We examine how capital flows can be aligned with sustainability goals through mechanisms such as green finance, social impact investing, and ESG integration in portfolio management. Our work also evaluates the role of government policy and market structures in influencing investment behavior.
04
Policy Design and Impact Analysis:
We study the design and implementation of policy tools—such as carbon pricing, environmental subsidies, and social regulations—to understand their effectiveness and unintended consequences. Our research provides evidence-based recommendations for policymakers balancing growth, equity, and sustainability.
05
Corporate Social Responsibility in China:
We investigate how Chinese firms navigate social and environmental expectations in both domestic and global contexts. This includes exploring the evolution of CSR practices, regulatory compliance, and the role of state-owned enterprises in advancing national sustainability objectives.
06
Climate Finance and Weather Risk Management:
We explore innovative financial instruments—such as green bonds, climate-linked loans, and weather derivatives—that help manage environmental risks and mobilize capital for climate resilience. Our research focuses on how these tools can support adaptation and mitigation efforts, especially in sectors vulnerable to extreme weather events and climate volatility.
